At last year's book fair, I rounded exactly 191 shops to purchase a copy of Maxim Gorky's masterpiece 'Mother'. It was the very first book of my 18 purchases that i started to read. Almost 6 months down the line and it isn't finished yet....reason a simple one....it represents a hero of working class in a feudalistic environment led by Russian Tsars and thus basically champions the idea of socialism. Socialism is what I come to believe of is nothing but a shameless form of capitalism....I would call it thus, pseudo-capitalism...example is China and I wouldn't say much to gain your approval.
I am writing this piece to celebrate the literary style of Maxim Gorky though. He was the most celebrated author of 20th century which boasted of pioneers such as G.B.Shaw, Antole France, Ibsen and not to leave the Russians, all of them a domineering force themselves, Tolstoy, Pushkin, Turgnev, Dostoyevsky and Gogol among many but Gorky eclipsed everyone of them with his sheer honest style of writing......I was honored to finally have a hand on 'Mother' earlier when I purchased it and am feeling privileged when I am down with it. During my time with it, I never felt much engaged yet I would have to accept the fact that it's been more than 8 months since I first read it but it's magic has still got a secret place in my mind somewhere. I cannot simply manage to forget it and I don't have such intentions now and in exercising it's magic on me, it has certainly fulfilled its promise of what all great works of literature aspire for.
Is Gorky's Mother still relevant given it's story doesn't really target a mother's life story, rather than the socio-political landscape of Tsar-led Russia? It's a question which I would like you to answer. For me, though, it still holds a meaning for as long a mother in any corner of the world could keep continue caring for her son/daughter, the world would continue to be livable place......It's time to hold on the words and relive the warmth and caring of 'mother'!!!!
