Key Observations from First Ever Day Night Test Held at Adelaide Oval Between Australia and New Zealand
Two observations from the just concluded first ever day night test match between Aus-NZ:
1) Australia were 116/8 in response to NZ's first innings total of 202. On a helpful pitch, a handy lead of 80+ would have done wonders for NZ. Then Lyon-DRS imbroglio happened and every cricket-fan's mood got spoiled. With NZ Cricket's honest, hardworking and clean image (and Australia's supposedly exact opposite), everyone wanted NZ to come up as a winner more so after their stellar performance in Perth Test. But as luck would have it, Australia prevailed, once again like those days of Great Australian (yet match-maligned) era. Australians again showed that if they are given a little sniff, they are still able to turn the tables on you. I'm glad that they showed their 'Australianism' once again and John Arlott, who coined and defined this term at the first place, must be smiling in heaven after witnessing their bravado performance.....perhaps, World Cricket needs a resilient, tough and a bad Australia after all to save test matches' grace.
2) NZ lost a test match....yet again after fighting their way through everything that's thrown at them. Trent Boult and Brendan McCullum spoke glowingly about the success of first ever day-night Adelaide Test Match and how both team played it. But I wasn't bemused and that's happened for the first time with me while New Zealand. NZ have always managed to pull punches above their weights. They are a wonderful ODI team and a capable test team. They boast off some of the greatest all-rounders of world cricket. Their record is enviable in world cups. But NZ Cricket's landscape changed forever after 2015 world cup. Under Brendan McCullum's daring captaincy, NZ completely transformed themselves and first time, they looked invincible even on fields. Even Mighty Australians bowed out to them. But with great achievements come great responsibility. Now we, the cricket fans from all over the globe, want NZ to WIN. They have lost enough matches with dignity than their share and I for one don't want NZ to lose any more, fighting or without so, and then speak about it glowingly. Every cricket playing country now wants to play NZ. Australians who played NZ for only 8 tests in last decade, are now playing them for 5 test matches in four months with great enthusiasm and in expectations of box-office extravaganza. So Brendan, please don't do that to us cricketing fans anymore. We now care for NZ Cricket, so start winning, consistently.
P.S. Josh Hazelwood is going to be another 300+ test wickets bowler for Australia and Kane Williamson, certainly the greatest Kiwi batsman in their history. Even Martin Crowe admits.
